Deswik Open Pit Design - Strategic Planning Solution

  • ON DEMAND

Course Brief

The Deswik Open Pit Design and Strategic Planning Training is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the open pit mine planning process, from initial design through to advanced strategic optimization.

This training integrates the use of Deswik.CAD for mine design and Deswik.GO for strategic mine planning, enabling participants to understand the critical link between spatial design and time-based scheduling within real operational contexts.

Through an industry-driven approach and realistic case studies, participants will develop the ability to evaluate multiple mine development scenarios, optimize extraction sequences, and maximize project value using data-driven methodologies.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the end-to-end open pit mine planning workflow
  • Analyse block models and interpret geological data
  • Generate optimal pit shells based on economic parameters
  • Develop operationally feasible pit designs
  • Build optimized Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans
  • Integrate mine-to-market considerations into planning
  • Perform scenario analysis to support strategic decision-making

TRAINING STRUCTURE

The training is structured into modules that reflect real-world mining workflows and industry best practices.

Module 1 – Project Setup & Data Preparation

This module introduces the fundamentals of project configuration and data preparation as the foundation of mine planning.

Module 2 – Geology & Block Model Analysis

This module focuses on understanding the deposit characteristics as the basis for design and optimization.

Module 3 – Pit Optimization

Participants will learn how to determine the economic limits of an open pit.

Module 4 – Pit Design

This module covers the development of operationally feasible pit designs.

Module 5 – Pit Reconciliation & Reporting

Participants will learn how to evaluate design outcomes against actual or planned production.

Module 6 – Introduction to Strategic Planning (Deswik.GO)

This module introduces the fundamentals of strategic mine planning and optimization.

Module 7 – Mining & Destination Optimization

Module 8 – Pit Scheduling & Phase Development

This module focuses on developing long-term mine plans.

Module 9 – Integrated Mine-to-Market Optimization

Participants will understand how to integrate the entire mining value chain into planning.

Module 10 – Scenario Analysis & Strategic Decision Making

This advanced module focuses on data-driven decision-making.

Topics include:

  • Sensitivity analysis (price, production, cost)
  • Scenario comparison and evaluation
  • Risk-based planning
  • Strategic decision-making frameworks

TRAINING OUTCOMES

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Develop comprehensive open pit mine designs
  • Optimize pit limits and mining sequences
  • Generate value-driven long-term mine plans
  • Conduct scenario analysis for business decisions
  • Understand the integration of technical and financial aspects in mine planning

By combining technical design capabilities with advanced strategic optimization, this training delivers a holistic approach to modern mine planning. Participants will not only learn how to use the software but also how to generate high-value decisions that align with business objectives.
